Telecoms

The telecoms sector is distinguished by its technical scope. Innovations range from the conceptual, such as the high-level organisation of an entirely new network, to the very specific, such as mathematical techniques for achieving reliable data transfer.

Our team has a wide range of in-house experience to draw on when advising clients in this highly competitive field and a long history of working with some of the biggest names in the sector. From advising on the licensing issues surrounding the launch of wireless telecoms standards to negotiating cross-licences between major patent holders, we have earned a reputation for technical excellence and a keen commercial awareness.

Our attorneys have experience in most telecoms technology areas, including patent filings and prosecution for standards-related inventions. Examples of our recent work include drafting and prosecuting patent applications relating to 5G protocols, IoT hardware and optical fibre systems.

CSR

Cambridge Silicon Radio (CSR) was spun out of Cambridge Consultants in 1999 and grew into a multinational, billion-dollar turnover company.

Our team helped to draft and prosecute much of CSR’s extensive patent portfolio. To give just one example, CSR asked us to protect a new project that they were close to disclosing to customers. The brainstorming sessions that we held with the project engineers yielded ideas for over 20 patent applications. We filed all those patent applications within a few weeks.

We have also supported CSR through critical patent litigation. CSR asked us to work with their US attorneys on patent litigation at the US Federal Circuit and International Trade Commission. We used our detailed understanding of CSR’s technology to supply their US attorneys with technical arguments and worked with them to finalise the briefs. This was a cost-effective approach for CSR and a successful one – all US litigation that CSR engaged us to work on had a positive outcome.

Neul

Neul pioneered internet of things telecoms technologies and were a founding member of the Weightless IoT standard.

We acted for Neul in their successful sale to Huawei. In addition to managing the development of Neul’s IP portfolio, we were responsible for advising the company on the relevance of their patent portfolio to investors, supporting them through investment due diligence and presenting their patent portfolio to investors.

The sale of the business underscored the value of Neul’s IP development and capture strategy, which we had developed together with the company’s senior management team.
