Stephen Turner

Stephen has been in the intellectual property profession since 2008.  He is both a Chartered and European Patent Attorney and a European Design Attorney.

With a broad physics background, specialising in experimental physics, Stephen has spent time in both academic and industrial research environments. This provides him with an insight into the business and commercial context in which inventions are made and exploited. He works closely with his clients to understand their current and future business plans before providing tailored advice.

Stephen assists clients in developing and strategically managing domestic and multi-jurisdictional patent portfolios, recently managing the international transfer of a patent portfolio for a US-based company. He also has experience in assessing the relevance of third parties’ portfolios to his clients’ business operations, and his clients value his practical commercial advice.

He advises on all aspects of patent protection, from identifying possible inventions in client meetings, through to considering potential infringement and invalidity matters. With experience of contentious proceedings, he has been successful in retaining client rights attacked by third parties, and has ensured a UK-based company’s freedom to operate in the face of a global company’s patent applications. He has also provided a thorough review of the relevant patent landscape for a start-up company to minimise the risk of contentious proceedings even arising.

Stephen helps clients of all sizes across a range of technical fields – spanning sporting accessories and mechanical devices to semiconductor structures, high-tech scientific instrumentation and electronics, and medical devices.

He also assists clients with creating valuable design portfolios and advises on the protection of designs around the world. He advises on both large and small design portfolios, recently helping a large US electronics company and a domestic start-up design company with their design filing strategies.

Stephen is actively involved in education within the patent profession, being one of the lead examiners and tutors for the patent administrators’ course run by the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys, with responsibilities including reviewing course materials, and preparing and marking examination materials.

Before entering the profession, Stephen spent some time working in Japan. He continues to study Japanese, and enjoys visiting friends and colleagues in Japan regularly.
