Paul Roberts

Paul has been in the intellectual property profession since 2004.  He is a Chartered Patent Attorney and a European Patent Attorney.

Paul works with companies of all sizes, ranging from start-ups to global corporations.  He takes a very active role in managing his clients’ portfolios, preferring to offer an “in-house” level of service to companies both large and small.  He advises on patentability, particularly in the area of software and computer implemented inventions, and has considerable experience leading invention capture discussions with inventors.  Paul has particular expertise in helping small and medium-sized companies new to the patent process to efficiently capture and protect their intellectual property.

Paul handles a broad spectrum of technologies in the physical sciences, including telecommunications, electronics, software, computer-related technologies, mechanical and automotive technologies, and medical devices.  He is highly experienced in drafting patent applications for filing in the UK, Europe and US.  He prosecutes patent applications to grant in all major jurisdictions, working closely with foreign attorneys where local representation is required.

Paul has considerable experience providing advice on contentious matters, particularly in relation to the infringement and enforcement of patents and design rights.  He drafts infringement and validity opinions for clients based in both Europe and the US and regularly manages large scale reviews of competitor portfolios across diverse technology areas.  Paul handles oral proceedings at the European Patent Office, and has successfully prepared both Oppositions and Appeals.

Paul provides advice on entitlement and inventorship issues and has experience of due diligence, including reviewing patent portfolios, managing freedom to operate searches and advising on infringement risks.  Paul handles IP transactions, such as assignments and licenses, and has experience advising on complex licensing arrangements.  He has a particular interest in Open Source software.

Paul also specialises in preparing and prosecuting registered designs in all major jurisdictions and advising on unregistered design rights.  Having filed design applications all over the world, he understands the varied formal requirements of different jurisdictions and their often significant impact on the scope of protection afforded to a registered design.
